Contraindications (TCM) Excess Patterns.
Caution with viscous sputum that is difficult to expectorate.
Due to slight toxicity, should not be taken in large quantities or for long term use.
Contraindications (Western)
Chemical Composition Ginnol, bilobol, ginkgolic acid, hydroginkgolic acid, ginkgolinic acid, ginkgo!, anacardic acid, protein, lipids, carbohydrates
Pharmacological Effects • Antibiotic: inhibitory influence against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and various pathogenic fungi
• Respiratory: intraperitoneal injection showed expectorant and bronchodilating effects
• Cardiovascular: according to one report, 500 mg/kg of bilobol lowered blood pressure in rabbits, rats, and guinea pigs; increases vascular permeability, and may cause edema
• Uterine stimulant: administration of bilobol associated with contraction of uterus in rabbits
