Chemical Composition Aluminum silicate, Al4 (Si4O10)(OH)8+4H2)
Pharmacological Effects • Binding: contains large amount of aluminum silicate; following oral ingestion of herb, aluminum silicate binds to, and subsequently eliminates, various substances present in gastrointestinal tract, including, but not limited to, phosphorus, mercury, and bacterial endotoxins
• Hemostatic: may decrease bleeding time in rabbits
Herb-Drug Interactions • Absorption: strong binding affinity; when it physically binds to another substance, result is a large, insoluble complex that cannot be absorbed; recommended that drugs and herb be ingested at least 2 hours apart
• This herb antagonizes or is antagonized by Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae)
